Jasmine: Katie, Katie! How are those puppies, Gus and Izzy?
Katie: Oh Jasmine, you won’t believe it. Ever since we brought them home from
your house, they’ve been getting into SO much trouble. I’m afraid that my parents
are sorry we got them.
Jasmine: Oh no! What have they been doing?
Katie: Well, last Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, Izzy went potty on the
kitchen rug instead of going outside through the doggy door.
Jasmine: Uh, oh.
Katie: Then on Monday, Gus must have tipped over the fish bowl and it made a
huge mess all over the floor! And I think they both chewed up my dad’s shoes.
Jasmine: Your dad must have been really, really, mad.
Katie: But the worst thing, is that Gus and Izzy have been barking and howling
at night, keeping everyone awake. We’re all getting grouchy from losing so much sleep.
Jasmine: Well, let’s make a plan to catch them doing those bad things. Then we can teach them to behave better.
Narrator 1: So, on Friday after school, Jasmine stayed the night with Katie
and her brother Chris so they could put their plan into action.
Narrator 2: First, they unrolled their sleeping bags onto the floor.
Narrator 1: Then they crawled in and pretended to sleep so they could catch the dogs doing bad things.
Narrator 2: They waited and waited and waited. But, after a while when it was
very late and very dark they all fell asleep.
Narrator 1: The kids were all snuggled in and sleeping soundly when they heard loud hissing and meowing noises.
Narrator 2: Katie nudged Chris and Jasmine to wake them up and they all peeked toward the doggy door. They saw a BIG, SCARY, DARK shadow.
Katie: Look, it’s just Mr. Wheedy, the cat, scaring Gus and Izzy!
Chris: Mr. Wheedy looks so BIG, MEAN and FEROCIOUS. He won’t let the dogs go outside! He’s causing the trouble!
Narrator 1: A few minutes later, Izzy walked over to the rug in the kitchen.
Chris: I think she’s planning to potty on the rug. I’ll take them outside and shoo
Mr. Wheedy away from the door.
Narrator 2: Later, when the dogs tried to come back in the house through the
doggy door, Mr. Wheedy was blocking the door again. Jasmine got up to open the
door for the dogs and Mr. Wheedy ran away.
Jasmine: I knew Gus and Izzy wouldn’t do bad things on purpose. No wonder
they whine and howl so much. When they do make it outside that cat won’t let them back in!
Narrator 1: After thinking about all of this for a while, the kids laid down to sleep. Everything was quiet.
Narrator 2: Suddenly, SPLASH!! The kids looked over toward the fish bowl.
Chris: WOW! Look, it’s Mr. Wheedy splashing the water trying to get the fish. The water is spilling all over the floor.
Katie: I’ll bet he’s the one who’s chewing up Dad’s shoes too.
Narrator 1: Katie raced down the hall toward her parents’ bedroom.
Katie: Mom, Dad! Gus and Izzy are really good doggies! We caught Mr. Wheedy doing all of those bad things!
Dad: Oh! Mr. Wheedy must be unhappy about sharing his home with the new puppies. We’ll have to teach him to get along with them. Now go get some sleep.
Narrator 2: The kids and the pets finally fell asleep. Then, as the sun began to shine through the window, Jasmine whispered,
Jasmine: Katie, look over there!
Narrator 1: Gus and Izzy were chewing on their dad’s shoes.
Katie: Well, I guess they’re still causing a little bit of trouble!
Narrator 2: Days and weeks went by and the kids tried to catch Mr. Wheedy
causing trouble so they could teach him to be nice to the puppies.
Narrator 1: No matter what they tried, the cat wasn’t getting any nicer.
Narrator 2: One day, the kids heard some VERY LOUD barking and howling in the backyard. They rushed outside to see what was happening.
Chris: Look! There’s a huge dog growling at Mr. Wheedy and he’s trapped over in
the corner.
Katie: Be careful Chris. It looks dangerous!
Chris: I wonder how he got in here. Someone must have left the gate open.
Katie: What should we do? That big, scary dog might hurt our cat!
Narrator 1: Before the kids could do anything, Gus and Izzy raced out through the doggy door. They must have heard the commotion.
Narrator 2: They barked and growled VERY LOUD. Gus chomped on the big dog’s tail until he yelped in pain.
Narrator 1: The frightened dog tucked his tail in and ran as fast as he could out
the gate.
Narrator 2: Mr. Wheedy stayed in the corner for a few minutes, probably still
afraid to move. Gus and Izzy walked around the yard to make sure that scary
dog didn’t return.
Narrator 1: A few minutes later, Mr. Wheedy walked up to Gus and Izzy, and
purred and licked their faces!
Chris: I guess he’s thanking the dogs for helping him. He must have realized that the dogs don’t want to take over his house, they just want to share.
Narrator 2: After that day, there was no more trouble between the dogs and the cat. In fact, the three of them snuggled together to sleep every night!
Narrator 1: At school the next Monday morning, Jasmine asked,
Jasmine: Katie, how are things with Gus, Izzy, and Mr. Wheedy?
Katie: Well Jasmine, now they are getting along really great. Let me tell you what happened.
Narrator 2: Katie told Jasmine all about how Gus and Izzy rescued Mr. Wheedy from the big dog.
Katie: Well, we solved that problem, but NOW my dad says it’s time to take the dogs to the vet.
Jasmine: Uh, oh!
